Veratrum tenuipetalum

Corn Husk Lily, False Hellebore

Family: Melanthiaceae
Type: Herbaceous
Location: Subalpine
Flower Color: Green, White
Fall Color: Yellow
Time of Interest: June, July, August
Description:

Very common in wet areas of the upper montane and subalpine, Veratrum has a lot of common names. Lisa grew up calling it "Skunk Cabbage" but it is not related to Symplocarpus foetidus (Eastern Skunk Cabbage) in the slightest. Beautiful greenish flowers emerge in mid summer. The plants begin to turn yellow and die at the first hint of winter, making them a sort harbinger of summer's end. The plant is toxic.
